These small spaniel-type dogs that originate from the Netherlands used to be popular around seventeenth and eighteenth hundred years (as confirmed by their presence in paintings of Rembrandt and other masters), however reached the brink of extinction after World War II. Thanks to enthusiasts’ efforts, Kooikerhondje have been safeguarded and are gaining acknowledgment again, although the variety has not been perceived in the US or Canada yet.
The Kooikerhondje have a reputation for being well-behaved, calm and loyal. They tend to be reserved with strangers, yet develop friendly and affectionate once they warm up to someone. These are fairly energetic dogs, so it’s better on the off chance that they have plenty of space to go around, like a fenced yard. Warning: since the variety has a seriously small hereditary pool, it’s inclined to certain hereditary problems, in particular von Willebrand’s disease, hereditary necrotising myelopathy (ENM) and eye diseases.
